The UN Security Council welcomed the agreement reached by the rival Libyan political parties, which paves the way for national elections to be held within two years, in a step aimed at ending years of political and institutional division in the country.<\/p>\n
The parties signed the UN-backed agreement in the capital, Tripoli, on August 30, as part of international efforts to relaunch the political process and hold long-awaited presidential and legislative elections.<\/p>\n
France\u2019s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, \u201cJ\u00e9r\u00f4me Bonnafont,\u201d whose country holds the presidency of the Security Council during September, said the agreement represents an \u201cimportant step toward holding free, transparent, and fair national elections.\u201d He added that the agreement would support efforts to unify Libyan institutions and respond to the aspirations of the Libyan people.<\/p>\n
The Security Council stressed the need for the Libyan parties to support the agreement and work to implement it, reaffirming its full support for the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative for Libya, \u201cHanna Tetteh.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTetteh\u201d had proposed a political roadmap in August 2025 based on 3 main tracks, most notably reaching a comprehensive electoral framework that would allow presidential and legislative elections to be held.<\/p>\n
The roadmap also includes unifying the divided executive institutions by forming a unified government, in addition to launching a dialogue involving various Libyan political and national forces.<\/p>\n
The Security Council\u2019s welcome comes amid continued efforts to overcome the disputes that have prevented elections from being held in recent years, and to reach a political settlement that ends the division and reunifies state institutions.<\/p>\n
