Morning coffee events at Isle of Man library to alleviate winter loneliness<\/p>\n

Weekly morning coffee events held at the library of the Isle of Man’s capital aim to “engage people who feel a bit lonely,” as stated by the library manager.<\/p>\n

The Douglas Borough Library, located on Duke Street, is hosting “Winter Warmth” events to encourage social interaction. These events take place every Thursday between 09:00 GMT and noon.<\/p>\n

This step is part of a broader program across the British Isles known as the “Warm Welcome” campaign, which seeks to provide warm spaces and local shelter.<\/p>\n

Jan MacDermott, a librarian at the facility, said: “Libraries at the moment are more than just books; they are community hubs \u2013 and they are a place in a community where everyone is welcome.”<\/p>\n

The mentioned manager added: “The idea is to attract people who might be feeling lonely or isolated, and we know that January is a really difficult month given the bad weather.”<\/p>\n

She noted that the library provides a “very important” service, pointing out that for patrons who “want to save on heating costs, it is a warm and well-lit space.”<\/p>\n

She added that these events provide the opportunity for people “to practice mutual communication,” but she also said that “likewise, for patrons who do not wish to talk but want to be in a social sphere, we have comfortable seating scattered around the library.”<\/p>\n

The facility will continue implementing these events until Easter and noted its participation in the “Coffee Morning” on January 19, often known as “Blue Monday.”<\/p>\n
