Tilapia is one of the most prominent farmed species in the region, along with catfish and other species that vary depending on the nature of projects and technologies used.

Fish farming activity contributes to supporting food security by providing a high-quality local protein source, in addition to diversifying farmers’ income sources, maximizing the use of available water resources, including treated water, as well as its role in supporting the local economy and creating direct and indirect job opportunities.

In light of limited water resources, fish farms in the region have adopted advanced technologies, most notably Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which help reduce consumption and enhance efficiency of use, in addition to applying aquaponics models, which strengthen integration between fish and agricultural production.

The Assistant Director General for Technical Affairs at the Al-Qassim branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Salah Al-Abduljabbar, confirmed that the branch places great importance on the aquaculture sector as one of the strategic tracks targeted within Saudi Vision 2030, noting work on expanding high-quality projects, strengthening partnerships with the private sector, and developing supply and marketing chains to ensure production sustainability and quality.

Al-Abduljabbar explained that the branch’s efforts include an integrated support system, including facilitating licensing procedures, providing specialized technical guidance, and implementing awareness programs and field visits, which contribute to improving farmers’ efficiency and productivity.

Engineer Fahd Al-Otaibi, an aquaculture specialist, considered closed aquaculture systems to be advanced technical solutions with economic viability, due to their high production density compared to traditional systems, as well as their role in reducing water consumption through recycling.

Al-Otaibi stated that these systems rely on waste treatment, including ammonia, through biological filters that improve water quality, which results in lower operational costs and higher production efficiency, noting that the sector has witnessed significant expansion in recent years, supported by rising demand and the adoption of modern technologies.

Aquaculture design consultant Saud Al-Otaibi stated that the aquaculture sector in the Kingdom is undergoing a qualitative transformation supported by Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economic base and enhance local food production, confirming that the expansion of smart technologies and modern aquaculture systems has contributed to increasing production efficiency and achieving higher levels of sustainability.

Al-Otaibi added that the sector is considered a promising investment field, given the development of supply chains and manufacturing, and the increasing ability to meet local demand and move toward exports, which enhances the Kingdom’s position in the aquaculture sector regionally and globally.

It is expected that the fish farming sector in the Al-Qassim region will continue to grow in the coming period, driven by the expansion of modern technologies and increasing demand for fish products, making it one of the key contributors to sustainable development and strengthening food security in the Kingdom.

United News Network – UNN Arabic
An independent media platform providing
