abduction in the Yemeni interim capital, Aden, in a development that comes about 10 days after a similar incident in the same city.

Yemeni security forces found the body of Wisam Qaid, acting executive director of the Social Fund for Development, inside his vehicle in the Al-Hasswa area south of Aden, hours after he was kidnapped on Sunday morning by unidentified gunmen.

According to surveillance footage published by Yemeni media, armed men abducted Qaid from in front of his home shortly after his arrival, taking him at gunpoint, while one of them drove his car, which was later found with his body inside.

In his first comment on the incident, Yemeni Prime Minister Shaya Al-Zindani condemned Qaid’s assassination, stressing that “the crime will not go unpunished, and the government will not tolerate any attempts to destabilize security or target national personnel working in state institutions.”

Al-Zindani instructed security agencies to take urgent and firm measures to track down the perpetrators, arrest them, and bring them to justice, emphasizing that the crime represents a blatant attack on state institutions and national development and humanitarian efforts.

In the same context, Interior Minister Major General Ibrahim Haidan ordered the rapid arrest of those responsible, calling for increased security readiness and intensified field efforts to pursue those behind the kidnapping and killing.

According to the state-run Saba news agency, the minister was briefed by Aden Police Director Major General Mutahar Al-Shuaibi on the details of the incident and the procedures taken to pursue those involved in the kidnapping and assassination.

Haidan confirmed that security forces will spare no effort in pursuing criminal elements and deterring anyone who seeks to undermine Yemen’s security, stability, and sovereignty.

International condemnation

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen quickly condemned Qaid’s assassination in Aden, calling for a full investigation and accountability for those responsible for the “crime targeting development efforts.”

In a statement on X, it stressed the need for Aden to be a safe place for both officials and civilians, affirming its support for the Yemeni government’s efforts to enhance national security.

The British Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif, said she was “angry and shocked” by the assassination of Wisam Qaid, who she said worked tirelessly to ensure life-saving aid reached millions of Yemenis across the country.

In a post on X, she added: “Those responsible must be identified, held accountable, and brought to justice swiftly, and security in Yemen must be maintained.”

EU Ambassador to Yemen Patrick Simonnet also expressed shock over the incident, stating that Qaid was dedicated to serving his country and worked tirelessly to help millions across Yemen, stressing the need to bring perpetrators to justice to ensure stability in Yemen.

Qaid held a master’s degree in Conflict, Security and Development from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, according to the World Bank blog.

In 2005, he founded the Small and Micro Enterprise Development Agency, which is one of the key institutions supporting thousands of small and medium enterprises in Yemen.

He was appointed deputy director general of the Social Fund for Development in 2019 before later becoming its director, where he oversaw donor funding to support community development programs across the country.

Earlier last week, unidentified gunmen in Aden assassinated Abdulrahman Al-Shaer, a political figure in the Yemeni Islah Party, with authorities later announcing the arrest of several suspects in the case.

Despite the relative calm Aden has witnessed in recent years and the decline in assassination incidents, the kidnapping and killing of Qaid represents a major security shock and brings the tense security situation back into focus, as local authorities and forces loyal to the legitimate government attempt to reorganize the military and security landscape in government-controlled provinces.

United News Network – UNN Arabic
An independent media platform
