For the Ninth Day.. Washington Intensifies Strikes on Iran Amid Rising Concerns Over the Strait of Hormuz
The United States continued its military operations against Iran for the ninth consecutive day on Monday, as tensions between the two sides escalated amid growing concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, alongside a rising death toll among U.S. forces involved in the renewed confrontations.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the launch of a new wave of airstrikes, confirming that their objective is to undermine Iran’s ability to threaten commercial vessels passing through the vital maritime routes of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy trade corridors.
In an official statement, CENTCOM said the strikes targeted coastal surveillance facilities and Iranian military air defense systems, in addition to military command centers, coastal monitoring sites, naval capabilities, missile launch platforms, drones, and military communication networks.
Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that U.S. missiles targeted several Iranian cities in the early hours of Monday, noting that explosions were heard in Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, and Imam Khomeini Port, without providing further details regarding the extent of damage or casualties resulting from the strikes.
Rising U.S. Losses as Escalation Continues
Amid the ongoing military operations, the U.S. military revealed new losses among its forces, announcing the death of a service member on Saturday in northern Iraq, where U.S. military bases are located.
The statement explained that the soldier was killed while carrying out a controlled detonation operation involving what CENTCOM described as “unexploded ordnance” attributed to an Iranian attack drone that had previously been shot down.
Earlier this week, the U.S. military announced the deaths of two American soldiers in Jordan, along with the disappearance of a third soldier during the fighting. CENTCOM later stated on Sunday that it had recovered “unidentified human remains” from the site of Friday’s attack, adding that examination and identification procedures were still ongoing.
According to the latest U.S. military data, the total number of American service members killed since the outbreak of the war has risen to 17, while the number of injured personnel has exceeded 420, marking one of the highest casualty figures suffered by U.S. forces since the beginning of the current escalation.
Hormuz at the Heart of the Confrontation
The new U.S. strikes came hours after CENTCOM announced the conclusion of the eighth wave of military operations, which also focused on targeting coastal surveillance facilities and Iranian air defense systems as part of an ongoing campaign that Washington says aims to limit Iran’s military capabilities.
The escalation between the United States and Iran has significantly intensified since the collapse of a temporary ceasefire agreement reached last month, as both sides exchanged military strikes amid a growing conflict over control of the Strait of Hormuz. This has raised increasing concerns over the expansion of the confrontation and a possible return to broader hostilities.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most sensitive maritime passages due to the large share of global oil and gas exports that passes through it. Any military escalation in the area therefore receives close international attention over concerns about its impact on energy security and global trade flows.
U.S. President Donald Trump, in his first comments after returning from attending the FIFA World Cup final, confirmed that military operations against Iran would continue, telling reporters: “We hit them very hard again tonight, and we did it in honor of the members of the U.S. armed forces who were killed since Friday.”
These remarks reflect the U.S. administration’s determination to continue military pressure on Tehran, as the crisis remains vulnerable to further escalation amid the absence of clear signs of a return to de-escalation efforts or a new agreement that could limit the widening confrontation between the two sides.
