Trump: Suspension of Strikes on Iran Conditional on Urgent Agreement and Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Israel have agreed to suspend the military strikes that had been planned against Iran. At the same time, he stressed that U.S. forces remain at the highest level of military readiness should action become necessary. Trump said the continuation of the suspension depends on the rapid conclusion of an agreement that includes the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the elimination of what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
Trump explained that Iran, along with several Middle Eastern countries, had requested a delay in any military action after broad outlines of a potential agreement had been reached. He noted that Washington had temporarily agreed to this request but emphasized that the decision remains conditional on the swift completion of the agreement and the implementation of its core provisions.
This development comes just days after the U.S. administration significantly escalated its rhetoric, with Trump warning during a Cabinet meeting on Friday that Iran could face a “very powerful” military strike in response to rising regional tensions.
U.S. Conditions and Escalatory Messages Despite Suspension
In a post published late Sunday on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that the United States is “prepared to strike the Islamic Republic of Iran with levels of military power and terror the world has not seen since World War II.” He added that an Iranian request, backed by other countries in the region, had prompted Washington to suspend the military operation.
The U.S. president said he had agreed to cancel the attack “for the good of the world and for Iran’s future and prosperity,” adding that Israel shares the United States’ commitment. However, he stressed that maintaining this decision depends on reaching a rapid agreement that includes the “immediate, complete, and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” as well as ending Iran’s nuclear threat, urging all parties to move quickly toward a settlement.
Trump’s announcement came as the United States raised its security warnings for its citizens in the Middle East. On Saturday, U.S. embassies in several regional capitals advised American citizens to prepare for the possibility of leaving the region, warning of the potential for “unexpected escalation” in the ongoing conflict.
Reports of Offensive Plans and Continued Pressure on Tehran
At the same time, The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed U.S. officials, reported that Trump had instructed military planners to prepare a new offensive aimed at forcing Iran toward surrender, with implementation potentially beginning by the end of the week.
Meanwhile, CBS News reported that the United States and Israel had been considering joint strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure, including oil refineries and power plants, as part of increased pressure on Tehran.
In recent days, Trump had also threatened to target Iran’s critical infrastructure, pledging to destroy a bridge or power station every time ships came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the link between maritime security and a potential U.S. military response.
In the same context, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously told Fox News that the United States had “eliminated” a large portion of Iran’s air defense systems. He argued that Tehran had become more prepared—and in some respects more determined—to reach an agreement addressing nuclear disarmament and the security of international waterways.
These statements, together with Trump’s announcement suspending the strikes, reflect Washington’s continued policy of maximum pressure on Iran, combining the continued readiness to use military force with the possibility of a conditional diplomatic settlement. The future of the current escalation now depends largely on whether ongoing efforts to reach an agreement succeed in the coming period.
