Rubio asks Witkoff to attend meeting with Macron in Paris | NBC

2 Min Read

U.S. Secretary of State Rubio planned a visit to Paris last April for important talks on Ukraine, but his plans changed temporarily before his departure. Information from a report obtained by a source for NBC showed that Special Envoy Witkoff had already held a bilateral meeting with French President Macron.

After discovering these details, Rubio requested to join the existing meeting. However, the Secretary’s aides faced difficulty in contacting Envoy Witkoff directly. This difficulty persisted for some time until Rubio was finally able to communicate with him personally. Witkoff later agreed to Rubio’s request to attend the meeting.

It is noted that the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously clarified that any amendment to the format of the meeting or the invitation of additional figures required the personal approval of Envoy Witkoff.

Despite speculations about the nature of the meetings, the report confirmed that Rubio succeeded during the Paris visit in holding a separate private meeting with French President Macron.

For his part, the official spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, Tommy Pigott, responded to allegations that Witkoff tried to prevent the Secretary’s participation in the meeting, describing them as “ridiculous” and “absurd.”
