League of Arab States Strongly Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, condemned in the strongest terms Israel’s step of recognizing “Somaliland” as an independent state.
Aboul Gheit emphasized, in a statement issued on Friday, the Arab League’s complete rejection of this move, noting that it constitutes a blatant violation of international law and an assault on the principle of territorial integrity and state sovereignty, which represents the fundamental pillar of the United Nations Charter and international relations.
Aboul Gheit described this move by Israel—characterized as an occupying power that daily commits violations against the Palestinian people and neighboring countries—as an attack on the sovereignty of an Arab and African state. He pointed out that the goal behind this measure is to cooperate with third parties to undermine the region’s stability, far from any commitment to the rules governing the recognition of states under international law.
Furthermore, Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, confirmed that the League Council, at both summit and ministerial levels, considers the region of Somaliland an inseparable part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
