President Donald Trump expressed reservations about the plan presented by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to end the conflict, asserting in remarks reported by Politico that “He doesn’t have anything and can’t do anything until I approve it first.” Trump added, “So we’ll wait to see what he has the day after tomorrow.”

Despite this, Trump expressed hope for the possibility of a productive meeting with Zelensky this week.

For his part, Zelensky expressed optimism on Friday regarding reaching a framework with the American President to end the conflict during their planned meeting on Sunday at Mar-a-Lago.

In a telephone interview with Axios, Zelensky revealed his readiness to put the peace plan to a popular referendum, stipulating Russia’s agreement to an effective ceasefire lasting at least 60 days to arrange and conduct the vote.

Earlier, a Ukrainian official reported that Zelensky, Trump, and a group of European leaders are expected to hold a conference call on Saturday to coordinate positions. Zelensky is counting on Sunday’s meeting to utilize all the progress made by both teams to establish a comprehensive framework for ending the war that includes a “timeline,” saying: “I think we are now at the next level… we want to end it as quickly as possible. That is why I am counting on this meeting.”
