White House correspondent Kelly Meyer, citing an unnamed source, reported on her “X” platform page that “the United States is moving a carrier strike group from the South China Sea to the Central Command’s area of responsibility.”
The correspondent added that the transfer of military equipment to the Middle East—amid tension with Iran—will take a week or so to complete.
Earlier, Israel Army Radio reported that several U.S. military KC-135 refueling aircraft took off from the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar to an undisclosed destination.
European officials warned of the possibility of the United States launching a military attack on Iran within the next 24 hours.
A U.S. official also confirmed the start of the process of withdrawing some personnel from major bases in the Middle East as a precautionary measure, in light of escalating tensions and U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to the Iranian regime.
Trump had threatened the Iranian authorities with dire consequences if they killed protesters, declaring the United States’ readiness to “help” the demonstrators in Iran.
However, he confirmed during press statements that the United States received information indicating that the Iranian authorities do not plan to execute those involved in the unrest.
Protests began in Iran in late December 2025 due to the devaluation of the local currency, the Iranian Rial. The protests focused primarily on sharp fluctuations in the exchange rate and their impact on wholesale and retail prices.
In several Iranian cities, the protests turned into clashes with the police and were accompanied by chants against the current political regime, resulting in the deaths of both security personnel and protesters.
