Trump: Our Relations with Venezuela Are Very Good After Conversation with a Venezuelan Official
President Donald Trump spoke to reporters, saying: “We had a wonderful conversation today, and she is a fantastic person. We have worked with her very well.” Trump did not directly name the individual involved, but the reference clearly pointed toward Delcy Rodríguez, the interim president of Venezuela.
Trump added that the former Secretary of State (Marco Rubio), who is no longer in office, was involved in the consultations, emphasizing that they have very good relations with Venezuela. Trump quoted him as having had a long phone conversation with the Venezuelan official that same morning.
For his part, the son of the detained Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, shared a message from his father to the Venezuelan people via the official news agency (AVN), which read: “Trust in Delcy and her team, and trust in us.” Maduro Guerra confirmed that his parents are “very composed and strong, possessing a clear conscience and trust in God and the Venezuelan people.”
This development comes after U.S. special forces arrested President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas on January 3 and transported them to New York, where they face trial on drug trafficking-related charges. Following the arrest, Rodríguez—who served as Vice President under Maduro—was sworn in as the country’s interim president.
Rodríguez has strongly condemned the U.S. operation, describing it as “loss” and a coup, while continuing to maintain that Maduro is the legitimate president of Venezuela; however, she also offered to hold talks with the United States regarding potential cooperation.
