Iranian Foreign Minister and UN Secretary-General Exchange Phone Call Regarding Situation in Iran

An Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement reported on Thursday that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, during a phone call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, explained the recent events in Iran. Araghchi stated that the events began with peaceful gatherings of individuals making economic and labor demands, which then escalated into violence through the interference of terrorist elements. He pointed to the direct role of the Zionist entity in arming and organizing armed terrorists, with support from the United States.

The statement added that the Iranian minister emphasized his government’s commitment to protecting the human rights of its citizens, including the right to peaceful assembly, as well as its firm commitment to protecting its people and ensuring public order and national security.

According to the statement, the UN Secretary-General affirmed the importance of all governments respecting fundamental human rights and rejected any interference in the internal affairs of other countries, including military interventions. He stressed the necessity of respecting the principles of the UN Charter, particularly the principle of prohibiting the threat or use of force.

This call follows a wave of protests that erupted in Iran in late December 2025 due to deteriorating economic conditions, which escalated in January following calls from the opposition. Tehran has repeatedly accused Washington and Tel Aviv of being behind the “riots,” while the United States and the West condemn the crackdown by Iranian authorities against protesters.
