Number of Internet Satellites Increases Tenfold Since 2019, with Projections of Significant Growth by 2030
The global sector for satellites providing internet services has witnessed a massive tenfold increase in numbers since 2019. Scientists predict that the number will reach approximately 100,000 satellites by 2030, amid a growing trend toward providing high-speed connectivity services via space.
However, despite the remarkable expansion in this field, Elon Musk’s Starlink remains the pivotal player and most prominent producer of satellites providing high-speed internet service from space. Nevertheless, new companies are currently working on launching their own satellites to compete with Starlink, which could threaten to reduce its absolute dominance in the market.
In this context, CNN producer Ivana Scatola conducted an exploratory tour in the heart of the desert to understand how these satellites operate, how they receive and transmit signals, and how they provide internet service to remote or isolated areas that do not yet have advanced communication technologies.
