Iraq Expands Investigation into Weapons Smuggling to Syria, Arrests Key Suspects

Iraqi security authorities have expanded their investigation into a weapons smuggling operation destined for Syria, arresting key suspects allegedly involved in the case, according to sources cited by Al Arabiya and Al Hadath on Sunday. The arrests come amid ongoing security coordination between Baghdad and Damascus to uncover the full scope of the operation and hold all those responsible accountable.

According to the sources, Anbar Provincial Police arrested the first suspect in the Al-Sufiyah area during a security operation targeting individuals linked to the smuggling network that Syrian authorities recently announced they had dismantled.

The sources added that the driver of the fuel tanker used to transport the weapons, identified as Saleh Mohammed Saleh, who had previously been detained by Syrian authorities, was allegedly recruited by armed militias in exchange for financial compensation to move the shipment across the border.

Investigations by Iraqi security agencies have also led to the detention of several other individuals suspected of having connections to the smuggling operation, as authorities widen their inquiry to identify all parties involved.

The same sources confirmed the arrest of a second suspect, identified as Hadi Sallal, noting that both suspects have been referred to the relevant judicial authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Advanced Weapons Shipment Allegedly Bound for Lebanon

The latest developments follow Thursday’s announcement by Syrian authorities that they had foiled an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of advanced weapons across the Iraqi-Syrian border, claiming the cargo was ultimately intended for Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The incident marks the first publicly announced case of its kind since Syria’s new authorities assumed office in late 2024. Although Syrian officials have previously reported dismantling Hezbollah-linked cells and confiscating weapons allegedly destined for the group, this is the first official statement describing an attempt to transport weapons through Iraqi territory toward Lebanon.

In a statement, the Syrian Ministry of Interior said security units intercepted the shipment before it entered Syrian territory after detecting a suspicious vehicle parked near the border under unusual circumstances.

Authorities said a search of the vehicle uncovered a substantial cache of sophisticated weaponry, including long-range missiles, guided anti-tank missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), describing the seized equipment as possessing advanced combat capabilities.

According to the ministry’s preliminary investigation, the shipment was intended to transit through Syria before reaching Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iraqi-Syrian Coordination Continues

Iraqi authorities announced immediate measures to pursue the case, including the formation of a high-level investigative committee composed of security agencies and technical experts to examine every aspect of the smuggling operation and determine responsibility.

Baghdad also confirmed that it will coordinate directly with Syrian authorities to obtain information regarding the shipment’s route, the parties involved, and the methods used to carry out the operation, with the aim of prosecuting those responsible and investigating any institutional failures.

Officials stressed that these measures are part of Iraq’s broader efforts to secure its shared border with Syria and prevent smuggling activities that could threaten national security or regional stability.

According to Syria’s General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs, the weapons shipment was concealed inside an oil tanker intercepted at the Al-Tanf border crossing with Iraq while en route to the Syrian city of Baniyas, before security forces discovered its contents and thwarted the smuggling attempt.
