The name of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma shone this year as he earned the title of “Best Goalkeeper in the World” from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) for 2025, in recognition of his brilliant performance this season with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain.

Donnarumma delivered an exceptional year full of achievements, winning four titles with Paris Saint-Germain across various competitions. Most notably, he clinched the UEFA Champions League title after keeping a clean sheet in the final, which ended in a resounding victory over Italy’s Inter Milan with a score of five goals to zero (5-0) on May 31, 2025, in addition to his remarkable brilliance in the earlier rounds of the tournament.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper also secured three other domestic titles: Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the Trophée des Champions, as well as contributing to Paris Saint-Germain’s second-place finish in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.

Donnarumma surpassed a group of the world’s most prominent goalkeepers in the voting, including Alisson Becker, Thibaut Courtois, Emiliano Martínez, Manuel Neuer, David Raya, Yann Sommer, and Wojciech Szczęsny.

How is the winner of the FIFA “The Best” Men’s Goalkeeper award determined?

A shortlist of the best goalkeepers was initially nominated for the FIFA “The Best” Goalkeeper award, selected by a panel of experts for their achievements between August 11, 2024, and August 2, 2025.

The award was voted on by the following categories: national team coaches, national team captains, football journalists, and fans who voted on the official FIFA website. Voters selected three candidates in order of preference: first, second, and third.

Five points are awarded for first place, three points for second place, and one point for third place. National team captains cannot vote for themselves. Each of these four voting groups (coaches, captains, journalists, and fans) constitutes 25% of the total vote, regardless of the total number of voters in each category.

The FIFA “The Best” Goalkeeper award is presented to the individual who receives the most points in the voting process. In the event of a tie in points, the award is given to the goalkeeper who received the most first-place votes within their specific category (where national team captains are the decisive factor).

The voting process for the FIFA “The Best” Goalkeeper award was overseen by an independent panel of observers.
