The Iranian authorities announced on Sunday the arrest of a group of people in connection with a widely circulated video showing a group of motorcyclists raising the flags of the opposition and banned “People’s Mujahedeen” Organization in Iran.
Videos that spread online in recent days showed people riding motorcycles through nearly deserted streets while waving the organization’s flags in white and red.
Iranian state television said the authorities had managed to identify and arrest “all individuals who appeared in the video,” claiming that they were affiliated with the “People’s Mujahedeen” Organization, without specifying the number of those arrested.
According to state television, the motorcycle convoy traveled through streets near the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, while the time when the circulated footage was recorded remained unclear.
The “People’s Mujahedeen” Organization was founded in the 1960s and was among the most prominent opponents of the Shah’s rule. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the organization entered into confrontation with the new regime, and its activities were banned inside the country.
During the Iran-Iraq War, the organization fought alongside Iraqi forces, while it currently opposes the Iranian regime and calls for its overthrow.
The arrests come amid domestic developments in Iran, coinciding with the confrontation with the United States that began on February 28, following U.S.-Israeli airstrikes that, according to the article, resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader “Ali Khamenei” and a number of senior officials.
