North Korea Launches an Unidentified Projectile Following Its Nuclear Message

North Korea launched an unidentified projectile toward its eastern coast today, Sunday, South Korea’s military announced, days after Pyongyang reaffirmed its status as a nuclear-armed state.

The launch came eight days after North Korea launched a series of short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, as part of what it later described as a joint firepower exercise.

The move also coincided with Pyongyang’s rejection this week of a decision by the International Atomic Energy Agency renewing its call for an end to its nuclear activities.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a brief statement that “North Korea launched an unidentified projectile toward the East Sea.” The Japanese Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the launch, saying via the “X” platform that the projectile was “possibly a ballistic missile.” Japan’s Defense Ministry later announced that the projectile had “already fallen,” without providing further details.

North Korea had accused “hostile forces” of seeking to end its nuclear program during the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference held this week. A spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry said the agency’s resolution “has no effect on the status of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as a state possessing nuclear weapons.”

Pyongyang has legally cemented its status as a nuclear state, affirming that its nuclear arsenal is sustainable and irreversible. U.S. President “Donald Trump” said in August that North Korea possesses 57 “very powerful” nuclear weapons, while Seoul estimated the number to be between 80 and 120 weapons.
