History of Thierry Henry: The life and history of one of France’s three greatest football players
Henry was born in the Les Ulis neighborhood of Paris, won the World Cup on home soil in 1998, and was an integral part of the team that won the European Championship in 2000.
With 51 goals in 123 appearances for Les Bleus, Henry was the country’s top scorer until former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud surpassed his record in 2022.
However, his famous handball against the Republic of Ireland during the 2009 World Cup qualifiers caused great controversy. Henry used his hand in the process of William Gallas’s decisive goal in extra time, which led to a 1-1 draw in the match, France winning 2-1 on aggregate, and stopping Ireland from its chances of qualifying for the 2010 finals.
After eight seasons at Arsenal, Henry joined Barcelona in 2007 and achieved the treble – La Liga, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey with the Catalan giant, when they defeated Manchester United in the Champions League final in Rome.
The Frenchman joined the MLS team New York Red Bulls in 2010 but returned to Arsenal for a brief period in 2012. In his first appearance for the club after five years, Henry scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Leeds United. Henry scored his only other goal during the two-month loan period in his final appearance for Arsenal, with an extra-time winner against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
After retiring in 2014, Henry took up a career and competed on BBC Sport as a studio analyst for Euro 2016. After working with the youth teams at Arsenal, Henry took his first step into management as an assistant to former Monaco coach Roberto Martinez in 2016.
In October 2018, Henry was appointed head coach of his former team Monaco, but he spent only three months in charge of the Ligue 1 side. He was appointed head coach of the MLS team Montreal Impact in 2019 but left the Canadian club in 2021 to return to Europe.
Henry was appointed France’s under-21 coach in 2023 and led his Olympic team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – where the team achieved the silver medal, ultimately losing to Spain.
