Ahmed Aboul Gheit Welcomes the Somali Government’s Readiness to Hold the First Direct Municipal Elections Since 1969
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, hailed the great efforts made by the Somali government to ensure the holding of the first municipal elections based on direct suffrage in more than fifty years, specifically since 1969.
Aboul Gheit noted this important and positive step, emphasizing that it strengthens the principles of citizenship, preserves constitutional legitimacy, and contributes significantly to supporting civil peace and sustainable development in Somalia.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League appealed to Somali political forces to prioritize the logic of dialogue and national consensus to overcome various security and political challenges, including confronting terrorism and strengthening the path of building the Somali state.
Counselor Jamal Rushdi, spokesman for the Secretary-General, explained that the League of Arab States is following with great interest the progress of the electoral process in the capital, Mogadishu.
Rushdi pointed out that this step is considered an important transition on the path to consolidating popular participation and enhancing Somalia’s path to transition from the indirect electoral system in place since 1969 to a system of universal direct suffrage, “one person, one vote,” according to the Somali provisional constitution.
The Arab League affirms its full readiness to provide all necessary political and technical support in fruitful coordination with Somali state institutions, and its continued support for the legitimate aspirations of the Somali people to achieve security, stability, and prosperity, and to fully restore the role of the national state.
