The LNG carrier “Alexey Kosygin” has entered the final completion phase, representing the first vessel of the Arc 7 generation within the gas fleet launched by the “Zvezda” shipyard for the “Arctic LNG 2” project. This type of vessel is characterized by its superior power, enabling independent operation in the challenging Arctic environment, as it measures 300 meters in length and 48.8 meters in width, with the ability to break through ice layers over one meter thick.
Tanker Specifications:
-
Capacity: Exceeds 172,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.
-
Propulsion: Equipped with three propulsion units with a total power of up to 60 MW, manufactured locally at the Russian “Sapphire” plant.
-
Dimensions: Ship length is 300 meters and width is 48.8 meters.
The ship is named in honor of prominent Soviet politician and former Prime Minister Alexey Kosygin, who held the title of Hero of Socialist Labor. The vessel is scheduled to undergo a series of technical and sea trials before its delivery in November 2025, which will include equipment adjustment, pilot operation, and preparations for LNG loading.
During the delivery ceremony, Igor Tonkovidov, CEO of “Sovcomflot,” stated that “the delivery of the first ship will accelerate the delivery process of the remaining vessels in the fleet,” explaining his expectations for the delivery of two additional tankers during 2026.
The “Zvezda” company continues to strengthen its position as an advanced center for large-scale shipbuilding, currently possessing all the necessary technologies for mass civilian production. Work is currently underway on the construction of more than 20 ships out of 60 in the order portfolio.
“Sovcomflot” is one of the world’s largest marine vessel operators, focusing on the transport of LNG, oil, and petroleum products, which enhances Russia’s position in the global energy maritime transport market.
