Liverpool and Wolverhampton Honor the Memory of Diogo Jota in an Emotional Moment at Anfield

Liverpool and Wolverhampton redirected their tribute to Diogo Jota on an emotional day at Anfield, as the two teams played their first match against each other since his passing.

The 28-year-old Portuguese player lost his life in a traffic accident in Spain this July, along with his 25-year-old younger sister, Andreia Silva.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 after spending three seasons with Wolverhampton.

Dinis and Hernandez, Jota’s sons from his wife of three, participated in presenting the match symbols on the pitch before the start of the Premier League match played on Saturday.

Jota’s sons, along with other members of his family, joined the Liverpool lineup for the match, emerging from the tunnel alongside the team’s star, Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.

Rute Cardoso, Diogo Jota’s wife, was also present at the match.

A banner reading “Diogo Jota, Forever in Our Hearts” was raised in the “Kop” main stand before the match began.

The Wolverhampton crowd continued to chant “Diogo, Diogo, Diogo” in the away section before everyone at Anfield joined in a round of applause while Liverpool supporters sang a special tribute to Jota in the 20th minute.

Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch scored the first goal for Liverpool and dedicated it to Jota—using the “shark” style celebration sometimes used by the Portuguese player.
