Long-range strategic cruise missiles were launched into the Yellow Sea (known in North Korea as the West Sea of Korea) during military drills conducted on December 28. Official media reported on the North Korean leadership, confirming the presence of leader Kim Jong Un at these exercises.
The report indicated that the “Hwasal” type strategic missiles flew in an orbit above the surface of the Yellow Sea for more than 10 seconds before achieving a “precise and distinguished strike” on the intended target.
These drills are considered an extension of North Korea’s persistent program to develop advanced strategic cruise missiles. These models are classified as capable of carrying nuclear warheads, with flight paths ranging between 1,500 and 2,000 kilometers. They are designed to be launched from naval platforms (submarines and cruisers) and ground platforms, with the ability to fly at low altitudes to evade radars, providing the ruling dynasty in North Korea with an effective tool to enhance nuclear deterrence capabilities.
