Protests Lasting Over Two Weeks Strike Iran Amid Rising Death Toll

Protests in Iran have continued for more than two weeks, with rights groups reporting that over 2,600 protesters have died in the ongoing crisis.

Protesters have faced a strong use of force by the authorities and have encountered severe difficulties due to the strict restrictions imposed on the internet and telecommunications in the country.

From the Iranian-Armenian border, BBC News correspondent Hugo Bachega confirmed his description of deep-seated feelings of “anger and congestion” within Iranian circles, expressing their concern over an unknown future.

He added that “some are deeply afraid of joining the ongoing protests.”

For its part, the Iranian government described the protests as “riots supported by Tehran’s enemies.”

The demonstrations began to protest economic conditions on December 28th, before turning into demands for the resignation of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
