Fear of Ospreys Extinction as Potential Y11 Deal Approaches with WRU Interest

Ospreys supporters are waiting in fear of their disappearance as a professional entity if a deal with Y11 is finalized. They anticipate that the club may cease to exist as a professional team if the planned collaboration is activated.

If this expected outcome occurs, it will not happen until the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) can reach an agreement with the United Rugby Championship (URC) to reduce the number of participating Welsh teams, as a potential alternative is currently being sought.

Questions have been raised regarding the future of the four professional teams under the Welsh Union, including the Scarlets and Dragons, indicating the possibility of their continued existence until the 2026-27 season.

Should the potential deal with Y11 be confirmed, Y11’s ownership status would face immediate scrutiny, as World Rugby regulations prohibit any organization from owning two clubs competing in the same tournament.

Regulation 14 of the aforementioned rules states: “No individual, commercial entity, partnership, trust, or any other entity may directly or indirectly own or control more than one club, except with the prior written consent of the Union concerned, or in the case of clubs from different Unions, with the written consent of the Unions concerned and World Rugby.”

The fate of the St Helen’s stadium redevelopment project in Swansea, which was designated as the new home for the Ospreys, remains under inquiry and determination.

Swansea Council had expressed support for the housing plan but remained cautious, waiting for developments in Welsh rugby reform before allocating more than £4 million in project funds to approve the start of development work.
