Two African national teams topped the FIFA World Rankings today, Wednesday, following the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations which ended yesterday, Sunday.
FIFA stated on its official website, “Despite Morocco losing the title in the final match, it advanced three steps forward to occupy 8th place globally, which is the best in its history, bringing the ‘Atlas Lions’ back to the top ten list for the first time since April 1998.”
In a related context, Morocco advanced to the top ten at the expense of Croatia, which dropped one place to 11th. Similarly, the national teams of Belgium and Germany each dropped one step, occupying 9th and 10th places respectively.
Meanwhile, the Senegal national team, the African champions, also reached their best-ever ranking after jumping 7 spots to occupy 12th place in the global standings.
On the other hand, Nigeria, winners of the Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal, and Cameroon, who reached the quarter-finals, both achieved a jump of 12 places. Nigeria’s Super Eagles now occupy 26th place, while Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions stand at 45th.
The Algerian national team rose 6 places to 28th, while Egypt, which finished fourth in the African tournament, advanced 4 places to reach 31st. Ivory Coast, the 2023 titleholders, advanced five places to 37th, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo moved up 8 places to 48th.
The Africa Cup of Nations led to an increase in the African continent’s share in the list of the top 50 teams in the world rankings, currently featuring 9 teams—two more than at the end of last year, 2025. Conversely, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) each lost one team, bringing their representation to four teams each.
UEFA remains the most represented with 26 teams in the top 50 of the world rankings, while South America (CONMEBOL) has 7 teams, and Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) teams remain absent.
