Aston Villa faces a new blow with the potential loss of captain John McGinn for two weeks due to a knee injury

Scottish midfielder John McGinn (31), the captain of Aston Villa, sustained a knee injury during Sunday’s 0-1 defeat against Everton, which led to his early departure from the pitch. Team manager Unai Emery confirmed that the player’s recovery period could take “several weeks or could be shorter, depending on the club doctor’s report and how he feels.”

Press sources added, “We are still waiting because he is still visiting some doctors to get a decision [on] the diagnosis and what needs to be done,” pointing to Emery’s statements during a press conference held in Turkey.

Villa, which has been suffering from an injury crisis recently, faces additional difficulties. The team arrived in Turkey yesterday, Wednesday evening, but several players were missing from the squad list for Thursday’s scheduled match against Fenerbahçe in the Europa League. Among those who did not accompany the team were Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martínez and Boubacar Kamara. According to initial reports, midfielder Boubacar Kamara will not play again this season after suffering a knee injury during the encounter with Tottenham last week. So far, the club management has not provided any update regarding his health status.

It is noted that Emi Martínez is suffering from a hamstring injury, while the new winger Alisson (whose full name was not mentioned in the source) also did not accompany the team due to knee problems. Likewise, midfielder Ross Barkley remained in Birmingham, while Amadou Onana has become available to play after a four-match absence due to a hamstring injury.

In the same context, the club’s Director of Operations, Roberto Olabe, flew to Turkey on Monday to monitor the performance of their former top scorer, Tammy Abraham, who is currently playing for the Turkish side Beşiktaş on a loan deal from Italy’s AS Roma. Abraham participated in his team Beşiktaş’s match, which ended in a 1-0 victory against Kayserispor.

It is worth noting that the 28-year-old British striker scored 25 goals during a loan spell with Aston Villa two years ago (2018-2019), contributing significantly to securing the team’s promotion to the English Premier League. Beşiktaş, currently sitting fifth in the Turkish Super Lig standings, previously held a purchase option for Abraham for approximately £12 million, which complicates negotiations between the parties.

On the other hand, Beşiktaş continues its negotiations to sign defender Manuel Agbado, the Wolverhampton midfielder. According to Turkish press sources, Beşiktaş management is still looking for other solutions within the current transfer window and has informed other clubs that the player is on the verge of returning to play in England with Aston Villa, despite significant interest from several other Premier League clubs.

At the same time, winger Leon Bailey was able to return to the pitch after an agreement was reached between Aston Villa and Roma to terminate the player’s loan to the Italian side Lazio. The deal, which took place in the last summer transfer window and granted Roma a purchase option, included an agreement that the player’s departure would be in the best interest of all parties involved.
