Putin: There Is Still a Chance of Reaching a Peace Agreement with Ukraine
Russian President “Vladimir Putin” said on Thursday that he believes there is still an opportunity to reach a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine, at a time when the confrontation between Moscow and Kyiv continues, while efforts aimed at ending the conflict remain stalled despite ongoing Russian-U.S. contacts.
Speaking at an economic forum in Russia’s Far East, “Putin” indicated that several countries—including the United States and China—are prepared to contribute to supporting a peaceful settlement to the conflict. At the same time, he stressed that ultimately, resolving the crisis should be the responsibility of Russia and Ukraine, as the two parties directly involved in the war.
The Russian president said: “But ultimately, the two countries involved in the conflict—Russia and Ukraine—must resolve the issue. This is the right approach.”
He added: “We are grateful to everyone who is trying to contribute to resolving this issue,” before responding to a question about the possibility of reaching a settlement by saying: “In my view, yes, there is a chance.”
Moscow Welcomes U.S. Mediation
“Putin’s” remarks come amid continued contacts between Moscow and Washington over the war in Ukraine. The Russian president confirmed that communication channels between the two sides remain open, noting that Russia does not object to engaging with any party that can make a positive contribution to negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
“Putin” welcomed continued communication with U.S. envoy “Steve Witkoff” and “Jared Kushner,” stressing that Moscow always welcomes visitors from the United States, signaling its willingness to maintain channels of dialogue with the U.S. administration.
At the same time, the Russian president repeated his accusations against the Ukrainian authorities regarding warnings they issued about the risks that aircraft could face in Russian airspace, considering such warnings to constitute what he described as “state terrorism.”
These remarks reflect the continuing disagreement between Moscow and Kyiv over the nature of the measures and mutual accusations related to the war, alongside international efforts to find a path that could lead to a political settlement.
Trump Links Summit to Peace Agreement
Putin’s remarks coincided with a statement by U.S. President “Donald Trump” regarding the possibility of holding a new summit with his Russian counterpart. “Trump” opened the door to a potential meeting with “Putin,” but this time set a condition: genuine readiness to reach a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
“Trump” said on Wednesday that he wanted to hold a summit with “Putin” “when they are ready to make a peace agreement on Ukraine,” according to Reuters.
This position sets a clear condition for any new meeting between the two presidents, at a time when diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war continue to face difficulties despite ongoing contacts between Moscow and Washington.
While Russia emphasizes that there is an opportunity to reach a settlement, “Putin” stresses that the final decision on ending the conflict must come from Moscow and Kyiv, while welcoming any international efforts that could help move negotiations forward.
In contrast, “Trump” links holding a new summit to achieving tangible progress toward a peace agreement, making the possibility of the meeting dependent on the ability of the parties concerned to overcome the obstacles that continue to hinder the path toward a political settlement to the Russia-Ukraine war.
