Sudan’s Intelligence Chief: Communication with Neighboring Countries Is an Indispensable Option

The Director-General of Sudan’s General Intelligence Service, “Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal,” described the ongoing war in his country as a “war of the state against the non-state,” affirming Khartoum’s openness to dialogue with neighboring countries, particularly Chad, Ethiopia, and eastern Libya, while warning at the same time of three major internal challenges facing the government.

During his speech before the Sudanese Media Forum in Khartoum yesterday, Wednesday, “Mufaddal” said that the “external factor” had contributed significantly to prolonging the war.

He noted that Sudan had faced difficult circumstances as a result of the positions of some neighboring countries, but stressed the need to engage in objective dialogue with Chad, eastern Libya, and Ethiopia, emphasizing that geography imposes coexistence and understanding among neighboring countries.

He said: “We cannot move Sudan to another place, and they will not move either, and they will remain neighbors of Sudan,” stressing that dialogue with neighboring countries is a fundamental principle for which there is no alternative.

“Mufaddal” described the current war as “the worst in Sudan’s history,” pointing to the scale of the tragedies and suffering it has caused, from El Geneina in the far west of Darfur to Wad Al-Noura in Al Jazirah State.

On the domestic front, the Director of the Intelligence Service warned of three issues requiring urgent attention: security, societal conflict, and the economic situation, calling for them to be addressed seriously during the coming period.

The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023, resulting in the deaths of more than 200,000 people, according to estimates by relief organizations. It also caused millions to be displaced inside and outside the country and led to the spread of famine in several areas, according to Agence France-Presse.
