10-Year Prison Sentence for Pork Seller in Iraq’s Najaf

An Iraqi court sentenced a pork seller in Najaf Governorate to 10 years in prison for selling it to citizens as “ground meat.” Alsumaria News reported today, Monday, quoting an informed source that the Najaf Criminal Court had issued a 10-year prison sentence against the convicted man, who had been selling pork to his customers as ground meat.

The ruling comes despite legal experts’ confirmation that there is no clear and explicit penal provision in Iraqi legislation criminalizing the sale of pork itself. A security intelligence team had arrested the owner of a butcher shop days earlier after it was discovered that he had been hunting wild boars in the Al-Hurriya marshes in the Kufa District and then selling their meat to citizens as ground meat in the central area of Najaf.
