Journalist “Ben Jacobs” reported via his account on the “X” platform, quoting a statement from the organization, that the Video Assistant Referee “VAR” made an error in interpreting the role and position of Manchester City player “Enzo Fernandez,” who was in an offside position during the build-up to the goal, and that the VAR should have intervened and requested a review of the incident by the main referee.
The “Pro Ref” statement said: “We contacted Manchester United this evening to acknowledge the error, and an investigation into the incident will be conducted.” The match was played yesterday, Sunday, and ended with a victory for Manchester City, who played with 10 players from the 23rd minute after one of their players was sent off.
The “Pro Ref” admission of the error is considered a rare precedent in the English Premier League, as the Premier League and the organization usually remain silent regarding refereeing errors, particularly in major matches.
