The name of sports broadcaster “Medhat Shalaby” topped search engines in Egypt, coinciding with new developments in the case filed against him over allegations of insulting and defaming “Mahmoud El Khatib,” chairman of Al Ahly Club’s Board of Directors. The Economic Court scheduled October 14, 2026, for the trial of “Medhat Shalaby,” after the case was referred to it under its jurisdiction.
The case dates back to a complaint filed by Al Ahly Club’s Board of Directors against “Medhat Shalaby” over remarks he made during his television program, which the club considered offensive to “Mahmoud El Khatib” and the club.
According to the case documents, the complaint included allegations of insult and defamation and the publication of statements that the complainant considered offensive, before the case was referred to the Economic Court after being reviewed by the competent investigative authorities.
The court is scheduled to consider the case at its October 14 session to examine the allegations against the sports broadcaster regarding the statements at issue in the complaint. “Medhat Shalaby” had denied deliberately insulting “Mahmoud” El Khatib and maintained, according to reports citing the investigation, that he did not intentionally make statements constituting a crime against the chairman of Al Ahly Club.
The proceedings in the case continue before the court, with no final ruling having been issued so far.
