Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged on Tuesday to prevent residents of the Tulkarm camp in the occupied West Bank from returning to their homes after they were displaced by Israel’s “Iron Wall” operation, launched in January. His pledge came after the Supreme Court issued an order requiring a timeline to be established for their return.
In a video recorded near the camp, Netanyahu said: “I heard that someone at the Supreme Court says a way must be found to bring the residents back here. These are not residents.”
On Sunday, the Israeli Supreme Court had ordered the Israeli military to establish a clear timetable allowing Palestinians to return to the camp.
The “Iron Wall” operation began on January 21 and resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of residents from the refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams. It also caused the destruction of a large number of homes, while the vast majority of displaced Palestinians were prevented from returning to their camps.
Netanyahu is preparing to contest a difficult legislative election scheduled for October 27.
