Study: Few benefits of vitamins for the elderly.. The importance of healthy food.

2 Min Read

Taking multivitamins is a staple part of the routine for millions around the world, but a new study raises an important question about the effectiveness of these dietary supplements.

A report published on the “Times of India” website stated that multivitamins act as a “nutritional insurance” to support general health, but research results indicate that their benefits are limited.

A Crucial Effect on the Mental Health of the Elderly

The “COSMOS” study, which included more than 5,000 people over the age of 60, found that taking a daily multivitamin slowed cognitive aging, compared to a placebo treatment.

An analysis of 573 participants also showed that those who followed the vitamin regimen to try to improve memory and maintain general cognition performed better. Experts described the results as “exciting,” confirming that vitamins could be an effective and low-cost tool to support brain health in later years of life.

Who Benefits Most?

Elderly individuals suffering from mild malnutrition or absorption problems, especially those with cardiovascular diseases, may see a greater improvement in the effect from vitamins. Previous studies also indicated that dietary supplements improved memory in participants over the age of sixty.

However, researchers caution that “multivitamins are not a comprehensive solution,” but rather focus on specific categories only.

The study explained that multivitamins may contribute to delaying cognitive decline, but they do not solve other health problems. They are a useful tool for older adults suffering from nutrient deficiencies, but taking them does not compensate for the need for a balanced diet.

The research results indicated that the “safe and economic impact” lies in improving brain health in specific groups.
