Egyptian President “Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s” adviser for health and prevention affairs, Dr. “Mohamed Awad Taj El-Din,” revealed the truth behind reports about the detection of a new virus or a highly dangerous variant in Egypt, stressing that the epidemiological situation is reassuring and does not warrant concern.
“Taj El-Din” reassured citizens, noting that no highly dangerous virus or significant viral mutation has been detected in Egypt so far. He explained that viruses mutating and changing their characteristics is a natural process, stressing the state’s readiness to deal with new or known viruses and take all necessary measures to protect citizens’ health.
The presidential adviser highlighted the importance of vaccination for groups that need vaccines, particularly amid the weather changes currently affecting the country.
He added that genetic and structural changes occurring in viruses are related to their ability to survive and spread, and may lead the immune system to respond to a variant as if it were different from the previous version.
“Taj El-Din” cited seasonal influenza as an example, noting that its strains change continuously, which explains why its vaccines are updated periodically.
He explained that the vaccine used during a particular season may differ from those used in previous seasons, depending on the circulating strains and the changes occurring in the virus. Therefore, influenza vaccines carry a date indicating the season for which they are intended.
“Taj El-Din” confirmed that the state has provided vaccines for groups that need them, noting that there are no exceptional health problems associated with the current weather changes.
These statements come amid global concern over the emergence of new strains and variants of viruses. However, the occurrence of a mutation in a virus does not necessarily mean that it has become more dangerous or poses a widespread health threat.
