Aircraft missing for 13 years found in Kolkata

An Air India aircraft, which had been missing for more than a decade, was found inside Kolkata International Airport.

The aircraft had been parked stationary at the airport since 2012 before being mysteriously classified among the missing aircraft.

The aircraft originally belonged to Indian Airlines, a state-owned airline that merged with Air India in 2007. Later, this Boeing 737-200 was leased for service to India Post after being converted into a cargo plane.

At a later stage, the aircraft mysteriously disappeared from all official records and documents of Air India, to the extent that no one remembered its existence, until the Kolkata airport administration requested Air India to remove it from the airport grounds.

According to reports, the airline will have to pay a fine estimated at about £85,000 for the long parking period of this aircraft that remained at Kolkata airport.

For his part, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson explained that the aircraft has been out of operation for several years, noting that its data was excluded, for an unknown reason, from a number of the company’s official documents.
