Britain appoints diplomat Christian Turner as new ambassador to the United States
Downing Street has officially announced the appointment of British diplomat Christian Turner to the position of Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the United States. Turner brings over 30 years of experience from his work across Whitehall and the organization of the British Foreign Office.
Turner will now take on an important responsibility from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to build ties with President Trump’s administration. Earlier, Prime Minister Starmer dismissed the previous ambassador, Peter Mandelson, after evidence emerged, including emails and video tapes, showing his continued cooperation with Jeffrey Epstein, an individual accused of crimes against children. Lord Mandelson has repeatedly offered apologies for his relationship with Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
The Foreign Office said in a statement that King Charles IV has officially appointed Turner, and the United Kingdom will now seek formal approval, or “Agrément,” for his appointment from the United States. Turner expressed being “honored” by his nomination for this position.
“At a crucial time for the transatlantic relationship, I look forward to working with President Trump’s administration, congressional leaders, businesses, and society to enhance these ties in the years ahead,” he said.
Turner will face intense diplomatic tasks upon assuming office. Primarily, these include dealing with the United States to pressure President Donald Trump regarding ending the war in Ukraine, a measure Europe fears may only be in its interest. The White House announced a few weeks ago the launch of a new national security strategy, which includes that Europe faces “civilizational loss” and questions whether some European countries can remain reliable allies.
The United Kingdom is currently awaiting negotiations with the United States over a large-scale security technology deal. In a statement issued by Prime Minister Starmer, he said: “The UK and the US have a very special relationship, and Christian’s extensive experience as a distinguished diplomat will ensure these uniquely close ties continue and are strengthened.”
Turner’s previous roles included being a political counselor in the British Foreign Office, High Commissioner to Pakistan, and the Foreign Office’s director for the Middle East and North Africa. He previously worked in Downing Street as a private secretary to the Prime Minister. Before entering government, he worked on documentaries.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said that Turner will bring “exceptional diplomatic experience and deep understanding” to the position.
