Kenya’s Ministry of Health announced the detection of a second Ebola case in the country, confirming that there are no indications of a widespread outbreak of the virus.
The ministry explained that the infected individual is a 39-year-old man who had close ties to the family of the first victim. He was already under quarantine and monitoring when his infection was confirmed.
The ministry reported that it had identified 128 people who had been in contact with the first patient and had managed to trace 113 of them by Tuesday.
It stressed that early detection of the infection reduces the likelihood of transmission to others, confirming that there is no evidence of community spread.
Last week, Kenya recorded its first Ebola-related death after a Kenyan national who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo died following his return to the country.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo announced a new Ebola outbreak in May, marking the 17th outbreak of its kind.
The disease has caused the deaths of more than 15,000 people across the African continent over the past 50 years.
