Hearts Manager Recognizes the Importance of “Basics” to Sustain Scottish Premiership Title Claim

Edinburgh – United News Network – UNN: Hearts manager Derek McInnes emphasized the need for his team to improve their performance in the “basics” of football if they want to maintain their claim to the Scottish Premiership title.

Hibernian crushed their rivals Hearts with a 3-2 victory in a powerful League Cup match, a clash between Edinburgh’s strongest clubs. This resulted in a historic situation for Hearts, who sit second in the league despite winning only two out of 19 matches.

While Hearts attempted to acknowledge some of the differences in Saturday’s match at Easter Road, McInnes criticized his players for their inability to perform the basics effectively enough, which led to the team trailing 5-3 in the second half.

The Hearts manager stated that his team now needs to “own” their heavy loss in Leith, but he indicated he is not ready to surrender the team’s “future in the tournament” after the tragic day.

“To reach the top of the league is not by being Barcelona, or by being something we don’t believe we are, but by performing the basics well in matches,” the 54-year-old manager told Scottish radio.

“If the basics are not performed well, then it doesn’t matter how strong you are or how good your record is; you will find yourself facing a difficult challenge.”

McInnes added: “The second half was a more familiar display of what we usually do. I believe we have only two wins in 19 games, and if we get two wins out of the next 19 games, we will have a great season, a fantastic season.”

He continued: “It would be premature to lose everything we have at this time. We lost a match and we realized the reasons that led to our defeat.”
