The Council of the Arab League Holds an Emergency Meeting to Discuss Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland as an “Independent State”
The Council of the Arab League held an emergency meeting on Sunday at the General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo to discuss the gravity of the Israeli recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
The meeting, held at the level of permanent delegates in Cairo, comes in response to a request from Somalia’s permanent representative to the Arab League, within the framework of joint Arab action to confront the unprecedented Israeli move. The Somali government considered this step a blatant assault on the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, amid warnings of its repercussions on the stability of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
The meeting is scheduled to discuss ways to respond to this move, including coordination with regional and international organizations, affirming the firm Arab position supporting the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia, and rejecting any unilateral measures that would undermine regional stability.
Israel had recognized, yesterday, Friday, the so-called unilaterally declared Republic of Somaliland as an “independent, sovereign state.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel will seek immediate cooperation with Somaliland in the fields of agriculture, health, technology, and economy.
