Video | Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Southern Spain and Rescue Teams Intervene.

2 Min Read

Areas of southern Spain, specifically the surroundings of the city of Malaga, witnessed heavy rainfall on Saturday-Sunday night, causing flash floods without any recorded casualties so far, according to local authorities.

Video clips circulating on social media showed the streets of several villages submerged in water during the night, while rescue teams began cleaning operations and damage removal on Sunday morning.

Antonio Sanz Cabello, the official in charge of emergencies in the regional government of Andalusia, stated via a post on the “X” platform that the heavy downpours caused 339 incidents, mostly in Malaga, confirming that none of them were serious. He added that the “emergency level” remains in place, although the Spanish Meteorological Agency lowered the alert level from red to orange.

Spain is considered one of the European countries most affected by climate change, having witnessed severe heatwaves and heavy rainfall episodes in recent years linked to the rise in greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activity, according to media reports.

These floods come while the country is still under the influence of the October 2024 disaster, which resulted in the deaths of more than 230 people, mostly in the Valencia region, and sparked widespread public resentment due to the political controversy between the central government and local authorities over crisis management responsibilities.

Despite more than a year having passed since that incident, investigations are still underway to uncover its circumstances and determine the responsible parties, amid continuous media coverage.
