King Mohammed VI corrected, according to a statement issued by the Royal Court last Sunday, the narrative of what occurred in the final minutes of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final, held at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca. He affirmed: “While this great continental football festival hosted by the Kingdom was marred by the unfortunate events witnessed in the final minutes of the match between the Moroccan and Senegalese teams, during which disgraceful incidents and behaviors were recorded; as soon as the intensity of emotion and passion subsides, the bonds of African brotherhood will naturally prevail; for this Moroccan success is also a success for all of Africa.”
He emphasized: “Morocco will remain proud of having provided a month of popular joy and sporting enthusiasm on its soil, thereby contributing to the radiance of Africa and football on the continent.”
He added: “On the other hand, in the face of defamation and some attempts to undermine credibility,” King Mohammed VI “remains convinced that hostile schemes will never achieve their goal, and that the Moroccan people know how to distinguish matters and will not accept being led by resentment and division. Nothing can affect the closeness woven over centuries between our African peoples, nor the fruitful cooperation existing between the various countries of the continent, which continues to be strengthened by more ambitious partnerships.”
He stressed: “The Kingdom of Morocco has been and will remain a great African country, loyal to the spirit of brotherhood, solidarity, and respect it has always dedicated toward its continent.”
He said: “Morocco will continue its firm and steady commitment for the benefit of a united and prosperous Africa, particularly through the mutual sharing of its experiences, expertise, and skills.”
The Moroccan monarch congratulated “all citizens across the various cities of the Kingdom for the efforts made and for their valuable contribution to this historic success (organizing the Africa Cup), which has received the recognition and praise of the entire world.”
These statements came after Senegal was crowned champion of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-0 victory over the host nation, Morocco, after extra time, following a goalless draw in regular time last Sunday. The match witnessed unprecedented chaos, with the withdrawal of the Senegalese players after a penalty was awarded to Morocco, before they returned again to complete the match.
