Senegal coach explains withdrawing his players from the Africa Cup final: protection from “refereeing injustice”
Bab Thiaw, head coach of the Senegal national football team, spoke on Thursday about his controversial decision to withdraw his players toward the locker rooms in the final minutes of the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, justifying his action as an attempt to protect his players from “refereeing injustice” and from the “bias” of the situation in those highly charged moments.
The coach, who led the “Lions of Teranga” to their second continental title, explained in a message posted on his social media accounts that the tournament was exceptional in terms of organization and technical level, but ended in a dramatic manner, and that he did not intend through his actions to violate the principles of the game he loves.
Bab Thiaw noted that his reaction was purely “emotional” and stemmed from a feeling of frustration.
