The United States held the Houthis responsible on Wednesday for the latest military escalation in Yemen and the region, affirming the Yemeni government’s right to defend its people and end the group’s ability to carry out terrorist acts, as well as Saudi Arabia’s right to defend its territory and citizens.
The U.S. Embassy in Yemen said in a statement that “the Houthis started this conflict and must bear the consequences of their aggression,” amid escalating confrontations inside Yemen and renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
The statement affirmed that the Government of the Republic of Yemen is the only legitimate government and has the full right to defend its people and work to end the Houthis’ ability to engage in terrorism.
Washington also stressed Saudi Arabia’s right to defend its territory and citizens, and to support the legitimate Yemeni government in its efforts to confront the Houthis.
The U.S. position comes at a time when Yemen’s battlefronts are witnessing a military escalation, coinciding with renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi territory.
On Tuesday, Houthi attacks targeted cities and energy facilities in southern Saudi Arabia, injuring 73 people, including women and children, in addition to causing fires and temporarily disrupting operations at some facilities.
Riyadh affirmed its right to respond to the attacks and defend its territory, while the Houthis said their strikes came in response to airstrikes targeting sites inside Yemen.
The U.S. statement reflects a clearer tone toward the latest escalation, with Washington affirming the legitimacy of the Yemeni government’s actions and Saudi Arabia’s right to defend itself, as well as supporting it in confronting the Houthis.
