Dead and Injured in Russian Attacks on Kyiv
Ukrainian authorities announced today, Thursday, that at least 12 people were killed and 33 others injured as a result of Russian ballistic missile attacks targeting the capital, “Kyiv”, during the early hours of the day. The strikes also caused material damage and power outages in several areas, while explosions were heard across large parts of the city.
Kyiv Mayor “Vitaliy Klitschko” stated that a number of residents were trapped inside a residential building, while fires broke out at several locations as a result of the attacks. He added that the strikes also hit non-residential facilities and warehouses, in addition to a children’s hospital.
In contrast, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces carried out extensive strikes overnight targeting institutions linked to the military industries and a transportation and logistics center in the city of Kyiv and its region, as well as military equipment warehouses at the ports of Chornomorsk and Yuzhny.
The ministry said in a statement that Russian forces used high-precision weapons launched from land, air, and sea, along with long-range drones, to target military-industrial facilities, transportation and supply centers, and warehouses in Kyiv and its surroundings.
According to the statement, the strikes in the capital targeted a commercial complex and warehouse belonging to “Ukrspetsystems”, which Moscow said was dedicated to producing components for long- and medium-range attack drones, as well as storing and assembling large numbers of drones.
Moscow Announces Strikes on Military Facilities
The Russian Defense Ministry also indicated that it targeted the “Fire Point” industrial facility in Kyiv, which it said produces components for long- and medium-range attack drones, in addition to parts used in “Flamingo” missiles.
It also announced that it targeted the state-owned “Antonov” aviation manufacturing enterprise, noting that it is involved in producing long-range “AN-196 Lyuty” drones, in addition to developing and manufacturing other drones.
In Kyiv Region, the ministry said it struck the “Zamler Group” logistics center, which it accused of storing and distributing dual-use equipment, including equipment related to the production of drones and robotic systems, as well as electronic warfare equipment.
The statement added that Russian forces targeted, in the Brovary area of Kyiv Region, a fuel and lubricant warehouse, which it said contained around 8,000 cubic meters of fuel designated for the Ukrainian armed forces.
Moscow also announced that it targeted an ammunition warehouse in Kyiv, which it said contained “M-900” thermobaric aerial bombs, anti-tank mines, and ammunition intended for “Baba Yaga” drones. It added that military equipment warehouses at the ports of Chornomorsk and Yuzhny were struck on the evening of August 19.
These developments come amid the continuation of near-daily attacks exchanged between Russia and Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, while diplomatic efforts involving the United States and European countries have so far failed to reach a permanent ceasefire.
250 Drones Heading Toward Moscow
On the Russian side, Moscow Mayor “Sergey Sobyanin” announced that air defenses had repelled a large-scale attack involving around 250 drones targeting Moscow and its suburbs from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.
“Sobyanin” said through his channel on the “Max” application that 250 drones flew toward the capital and its surrounding areas between 20:30 on August 19 and 07:30 on August 20, confirming that air defense systems destroyed most of them before they reached Moscow.
He added that another 28 drones were destroyed as they approached the capital, while emergency teams continued working at debris-crash sites and taking the necessary measures to deal with the effects of the attack.
