Sony and Warner Sue Anthropic
Units of Sony Music and Warner Music have filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Anthropic in federal court in Northern California, accusing the company of what the complaint describes as one of the largest, most sustained, and most brazen acts of intellectual property theft in history.
The allegations were laid out in a 48-page complaint, opening a new chapter in the escalating dispute between content companies and artificial intelligence firms over the use of copyrighted material to train AI models.
The lawsuit is expected to mark the beginning of a lengthy legal battle that could last for years, as questions continue to grow over the limits of using musical works to develop artificial intelligence technologies and how the rights of creators can be protected amid the rapid transformation of the technology sector.
The lawsuit, filed by music publishing companies affiliated with Sony and Warner, names Anthropic, along with its CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann, as defendants.
Allegations of Downloading Thousands of Copyrighted Works
The complaint alleges that the defendants carried out a large-scale campaign to illegally download copyrighted works using torrent files, with the aim of using them to develop Anthropic’s Claude series of artificial intelligence models and generate substantial profits from them.
According to the publishing companies, the alleged conduct went far beyond the use of a limited number of works. The lawsuit accuses Anthropic of training its models on tens of thousands of copyrighted musical compositions, on a scale broader than previous cases that focused on smaller and more specific collections of works.
The publishers are seeking damages of $150,000 for each work found to have been infringed, in addition to another $25,000 for each instance involving the removal of identifiable copyright management information. Based on the number of works and alleged violations covered by the lawsuit, the damages sought could amount to several billion dollars.
These claims place the case at the center of the growing debate over the legal responsibility of artificial intelligence companies when they use copyrighted content to train their models, and whether such use can take place without obtaining licenses from rights holders.
Not Anthropic’s First Legal Battle
The latest lawsuit is not Anthropic’s first legal confrontation over allegations that it used copyrighted material to train its artificial intelligence models.
In September 2025, the company agreed to a settlement described as historic in the United States, worth approximately $1.5 billion, with a group of authors and publishers in a case involving the use of copyrighted material to train its models.
Anthropic has also previously faced lawsuits from other parties in the music industry, as disputes continue to expand over the use of songs and musical works in the development of artificial intelligence systems.
Those lawsuits have involved music groups and publishers including Universal Music Group, Concord, ABKCO, BMG, and Round Hill Music.
The new case comes as artificial intelligence companies seek to expand the capabilities of their models and leverage vast amounts of data and content, while music companies and publishers are intensifying their legal efforts to defend intellectual property rights and ensure that their works are not used without permission or appropriate compensation.
The legal battle could have implications extending beyond the parties involved, particularly if it becomes a broader legal test of the rules governing the use of copyrighted content to train artificial intelligence models, and whether the methods currently being used will remain acceptable in a rapidly growing market.
