North Korea Tests a New Weapons System.. South Korea Calls for Its Nuclear Disarmament

North Korea announced on Tuesday that it had launched a new missile earlier this week, while leader “Kim Jong Un” described the test as a demonstration of “highly advanced” defense technology. Meanwhile, the South Korean president said he would affirm during this week’s United Nations General Assembly meetings the need to move forward with the practical and gradual denuclearization of North Korea, pointing to Seoul and Washington’s readiness to resume dialogue with “Pyongyang.”

The South Korean president’s call comes at a time when North Korea continues to test its weapons, despite the United States reducing the scope of a joint military exercise with South Korea, in a move aimed at easing and lowering tensions with Pyongyang. The Korean Central News Agency reported that the Missile Administration conducted a “successful test of a new type of weapon” on Sunday in the presence of “Kim Jong Un.”

North Korea did not reveal the nature of the weapons system that was tested, but confirmed that the test was “of great significance to the rapid technological development of weapons systems.”

“Kim” described the test as “undoubtedly a striking demonstration of highly advanced defense technology” and “a clear renewal in the modernization of the armed forces,” according to the agency. “Kim” said his country’s adversaries would better understand the military significance of this technological advancement, noting that the technology would be important for strengthening the country’s war readiness and developing its armed forces in the future.

The agency added that “Kim” stressed that this development “will cause the enemy an incurable headache and an unavoidable severe blow.” The announcement came two days after South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that North Korea had launched two short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea from the Wonsan area.
