An Iranian source denied that new talks would be held today, Monday, between Washington and Tehran, following U.S. President “Donald Trump’s” announcement that he expects negotiations with Iran to resume next week. The Iranian News Agency “IRNA” quoted a source close to the Iranian delegation in New York, which is participating in the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly, as saying that the delegation “does not intend to hold negotiations with the United States.”
“Trump” had said on Sunday to “Axios” that he expects talks with Iran to resume next week, one day after rejecting Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. In the same context, “The Wall Street Journal” quoted mediators involved in the talks as saying that there is pressure on Iran to make concessions regarding its nuclear program, in an attempt to resume negotiations with the United States.
According to the newspaper, these efforts aim to prevent a renewed escalation from turning into a broader military confrontation, while mediators are seeking to bring the nuclear issue back to the forefront of the negotiations, rather than focusing on the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. blockade imposed on Iranian ports. However, the mediators indicated that Tehran has so far provided little indication of its willingness to make concessions regarding its nuclear program, while Iranian officials are calling on Washington to take reciprocal steps before any progress can be made in the negotiations.
