Hackers announce the theft of data of 16.4 million French citizens after a cyberattack on the Ministry of the Interior.
In a new development, hackers announced the theft of data from more than 16.4 million French citizens following an attack targeting the systems of the French Ministry of the Interior, according to Le Figaro, citing a post on “BreachForums,” a site famous for data leaks.
The French Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, acknowledged last week that his ministry had been subjected to a cyberattack but denied the occurrence of a major breach, noting that the hackers only managed to access “some internal files.”
However, the hackers responded by confirming that they had breached police records and government mail services, in addition to wanted lists and criminal record databases, which include information on victims and witnesses.
The attackers also claimed to have accessed the communication channels of Interpol, along with the General Directorate of Public Finances and the National Old-Age Insurance Fund.
According to the published message, the perpetrator of the attack is known as “Indra,” who described the operation as “revenge” for the arrest of members of the “ShinyHunters” group involved in cyber piracy, threatening to publish the data within a week if the government does not respond and begin negotiations.
It is noteworthy that the forum where these threats were posted is often used to leak stolen databases and was previously used to publish data of about 200 million Twitter (X) users.
