Joint Statement by Foreign Ministers of 20 Countries and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Condemning Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland
The Foreign Ministers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Sultanate of Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Turkey, the Republic of Yemen, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) affirmed the following:
The statement expressed categorical rejection of Israel’s announcement recognizing the “Somaliland” region located in the Federal Republic of Somalia. It considered this unprecedented measure likely to trigger serious repercussions for peace and security in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea regions, as well as threatening international peace and security. The statement also views this stance as an expression of Israel’s indifference to international law.
The statement held Israel responsible for its blatant violation of the rules of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, which emphasizes the preservation of the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of states. The statement condemned this recognition in the strongest terms.
The statement stressed its full commitment to supporting the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia and its rejection of any measures that would undermine Somalia’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty over all its lands.
The statement warned of the danger of the precedent of recognizing the independence of parts of state territories, adding that it represents a threat to international peace and security and to the established principles of international law and the UN Charter. It also affirmed its categorical rejection of linking this measure to any plans for the displacement of the Palestinian people outside their land, which are rejected in form and substance and in their entirety.
