China Launches World’s First Mandatory Energy Consumption Standard for Electric Vehicles
Chinese authorities announced today the adoption of the first globally mandatory standard specifying the maximum energy consumption for electric vehicles, with official implementation set to begin on January 1, 2026. This step aims to raise vehicle efficiency, reduce electricity consumption, and improve the driving range of electric cars.
According to the new system, maximum consumption limits will be determined based on the vehicle’s weight and category. For example, electric cars weighing close to two tons will not be allowed to exceed 15.1 kWh per 100 kilometers, with values varying according to the size and weight of each vehicle.
Regulatory authorities emphasized that the goal of this standard is to incentivize companies to develop more efficient motor and battery technologies, contributing to increased driving range, lowering pressure on power grids, and reducing indirect emissions associated with electricity generation.
The decision is expected to directly impact the design of electric vehicles over the coming years, especially large and heavy models, as compliance with the standard will be a requirement for receiving government incentives and support within the Chinese market, which is the world’s largest in electric vehicle sales.
